YouTube recently rolled out a new placement option called First Position Serving, which guarantees your ad plays first in an ad pod (the back-to-back ad breaks that are becoming more common across the platform).

For now, this feature is only available through reservation buying — but it’s safe to assume it will expand to all advertisers in the near future.

What Are Ad Pods?

If you’ve been on YouTube lately, you’ve probably noticed more back-to-back ads before or during videos. These groupings are called ad pods, and they’re Google’s way of conditioning viewers to sit through multiple ads at once — similar to how TV networks have always bundled commercials.

  • Pre-roll pods: Two ads play before your video starts.

  • Mid-roll pods: Two or more ads appear during longer content.

  • End pods: Sometimes placed after a video finishes.

The problem? If you’re the second or third ad in the pod, there’s a higher chance viewers hit “Skip” or mentally check out before your message even starts. That’s exactly the gap First Position Serving is designed to fix.

What It Means for Advertisers

  • Prime placement: Your ad shows first, when viewers are most engaged.

  • Better visibility: No risk of being skipped after another brand.

  • Higher cost: YouTube hasn’t shared pricing details, but expect this slot to carry a premium.

Why It Matters for Law Firms

For law firms running YouTube ads, the difference between being first or second in a pod can make or break performance. Legal campaigns already require precision targeting, and the higher intent of the first slot can mean more clients actually see — and remember — your ad.

First Position Serving will almost certainly be more expensive, but the payoff could be worth it if you value consistent visibility and stronger watch times.

Our Take

First Position Serving may cost more, but it’s going to be integral to ensuring you get the most watch time out of your YouTube ads. We’ll be testing it, tracking cost differences, and making sure our clients get the visibility they need.

Google quietly pushed another update to the search results: grouped results can now appear at the top, middle, and bottom of the page.

Recent ad policy changes on YouTube and Google’s Discovery Feed are starting to classify certain phrases as clickbait.
